Horrid, dreaded, hated. Zits!

No earthly good can come from a zit. Ask any teen who stares into the mirror before a date. Why don't those teenage models in fashion magazines have zits? The airbrush. "Mom can you get me an airbrush?" No magic wand exists, but there are measures that work to prevent and treat acne. A combination of approaches will bring the best results.

Will teenagers make the effort and take the time to institute preventive measures for acne? Some will, especially if the measures are not too complicated. For those people whose acne persists into the adult years, the dietary and lifestyle changes will have overall beneficial effects on health as well.
Why acne?

The androgenic hormones, particularly testosterone, that increase at puberty, and the surge of premenstrual hormones, trigger increased production of sebum in the sweat glands. The pores become clogged with both sebum and dead skin cells creating a prime breeding ground for bacteria. These bacteria and the breakdown products of sebum cause irritation and inflammation in the pores. The result is acne – blackheads, whiteheads, pustules, and cysts in the skin. Unfortunately, certain people are genetically predisposed to have more problems with acne than others.

Chinese medicine theory attributes acne to Heat and Toxicity in the Blood. Because acne lesions often occur along the classic T pattern, on the forehead, around the nose, and on the chin, where the energy meridians of the Stomach, Small Intestine, and Large Intestine originate and end, acne is also seen as a digestive problem. The skin has become an eliminating organ because of toxins resulting from poor digestion or chemical exposure.
What to do?

The measures to prevent and cure acne include diet, hygiene, nutritional supplements, and medicines. Maintain a consistent preventive and treatment program and acne will resolve. Natural treatments have no side effects. Drugs can cause problems, but may be necessary in persistent cases. Most problems with acne, however, will respond to natural treatments and a diligent program of diet and skin care.
Diet

The type of fats in the diet are a key factor for acne control. Use olive oil for cooking and on salads. Saturated fats and partially hydrogenated fats cause damage to body tissues and promote inflammation. Saturated fats are solid at room temperature and usually come from animal sources. Eat non-fat or low-fat dairy products. Cut back on red meats and butter. Partially hydrogenated fats are even worse because they replace unsaturated fats in cells. Eliminate partially hydrogenated fats from the diet. Avoid packaged snack foods, chips, crackers, and cookies that contain these fats. Read the labels on packaged products. Never eat margarine. Avoid fried foods. Oils that are heated and re-used to make French fries and fried chicken contain particularly harmful toxins. Supplement the diet with the omega-3 fats found in salmon and flax seeds. Avoid the omega-6 fats of vegetable oils (corn oil, safflower oil, soybean oil, cottonseed oil) because they promote inflammation.

It is also important to eat adequate quantities of protein and not overeat carbohydrates in order to prevent inflammation. Cut back on baked foods made with wheat flour and any foods containing large amounts of sugar. Overloading on carbohydrates is a major cause of weight problems and tissue damage. Overeating also increases testosterone levels and promotes acne. Do not eat more than necessary to maintain body weight and energy expenditure.

Eat plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, and salads. The vitamins contained in these foods can have a significant beneficial effect on acne. The fiber is essential for healthy digestion and elimination. Foods high in vitamin A and beta-carotene are especially good nutritional sources (carrots, sweet potatoes, apricots, and green leafy vegetables, spinach, kale, and romaine lettuce).

Avoid foods that increase Heat in the body, spicy foods, garlic, and coffee. Drink plenty of purified water or spring water (up to 4 quarts of water a day) to flush out toxins and transport nutrients.
Diet essentials

1. Cut back on saturated fats (whole milk, cheese, and red meat).

2. Eliminate partially hydrogenated fats. (Read labels. They are contained in chips crackers, and cookies, all those snack foods in a box or bag).

3. Eat fresh fruits, vegetables, and salads.
Nutritional supplements

Nutritional supplements for acne will decrease inflammation and infection and nourish the skin. If consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables is low, take a multi-vitamin supplement. Buy supplements at a health food store rather than a discount store or supermarket. The vitamin and mineral sources will be higher quality. Remember that foods provide a more balanced and absorbable form of nutrients than pills. Reliance on supplements as the only source of vitamins will not produce adequate results.

The most important vitamins and minerals for acne eruptions are vitamin A from fish oil and zinc. Vitamin A is necessary for skin healing. Take 25,000 units of vitamin A twice a day. Zinc aids in healing of tissue and assists in preventing scarring. It also helps the body resist infection and inflammation. Zinc is one mineral that has shown to benefit acne in a scientific study. Take 50 mg of zinc in combination with 5 mg of copper, which can become deficient during zinc supplementation. Do not take more than 100 mg of zinc in supplements per day.

Omega-3 fatty acids have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. They maintain healthy cell membranes and ensure the normal transport of nutrients into cells. For those reasons, a supplement of omega-3 fats is one of the most important nutrients for acne. Take one tablespoon of cod liver oil or concentrated fish oil capsules with 1,500 mg EPA each day.

Acidophilus is a normal intestinal bacteria that can be easily destroyed. Take a supplement of acidophilus to maintain normal digestive function.

For people with especially oily skin, digestive (pancreatic) enzymes are important. Fats may not be fully digested and a supplement with meals will provide the enzymes lipase, protease, and amylase for adequate break down of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates, improving the digestive process.

Nutritional supplement essentials

1. Cod liver oil – 1 tablespoon per day with meals

Or

Concentrated fish oil – 3 capsules per day

2. Zinc with Copper (50 mg zinc and 5 mg copper per day)

3. Acidophilus capsules (1 capsule twice/day) with meals
Skin applications

There are two reasons for people with acne to apply things to the skin. One is to exfoliate skin cells. Hormones that cause acne also cause excess shedding of skin cells, which block the pores. Exfoliants will correct abnormal shedding and unclog the pores. The second type of application, antiseptics and antibacterials will help prevent infections in the pores.

It is important to maintain an acid environment in the skin. Do not wash the skin with soap, which is too alkaline and debrides the acid mantle of the skin. Instead, use a facial brush and hot water. Do not use products that contain alcohol.

Exfoliants

Alpha-hydroxy acids are naturally occurring acids found in sugar cane and citrus fruit. They augment the skin's exfoliating abilities and decrease the build-up of dead skin cells. They have been shown to improve acne. The most common are lactic acid and glycolic acid.

Lemon juice wash

Wash with hot water and a facial brush or washcloth. Squeeze a fresh lemon into a small bowl and put the juice on a cotton ball. Apply cotton ball to face. Repeat soaking of cotton ball in lemon juice as needed. Let lemon juice dry on face for about 10 minutes then rinse with cool water. The lemon juice should make your face sting or mildly burn. For sensitive skin, dilute juice with filtered water.

Once the skin is regenerating (after two weeks using gentle, natural treatments) you may want to add a stronger facial exfoliant. Many cosmetic manufacturers produce Glycolic acid formulas (15 percent strength). Avoid products that contain heavy moisturizing ingredients and alcohol. Glycolic acid helps loosen or break up the outer layer of the skin and prevents excessive build-up of dead skin cells.

Vitamin A derivatives (retinoids) - topical vitamin A acid - normalizes the way skin grows and sheds and stabilizes the openings of pores. It also creates an unwelcome environment for bacteria. Retin-A and other retinoids in cream or gel are available by prescription only. Side effects include red skin and peeling, and sun sensitivity. Do not use during pregnancy.

Antiseptics and antibacterials

Honey facial

Use uncooked honey, apply to face and pat until sticky. Leave in place for five minutes. Honey enzymes rejuvenate the skin and act as an antimicrobial.

Tea tree oil has been shown to remove and stop the growth of bacteria on the skin. An Australian study showed that a 5 percent tea tree oil gel was as effective as 5 percent benzoyl peroxide. Tea tree oil is the only essential oil (except for lavender) that can be applied directly to the skin with no carrier oil. Like other antimicrobials, tea tree oil should be used in a consistent daily regimen to prevent infections.

Benzoyl peroxide reduces bacteria on the skin and helps to peel the superficial layer of cells. Gentler, lower strengths (3-5 percent solutions) are less irritating and equally effective as stronger solutions. Again, avoid formulas that contain alcohol or cleansers. Benzoyl peroxide is a bleach. It may bleach clothing and can be irritating. Side effects include irritation, drying, itching, redness, and peeling.

Azelaic acid is found naturally in wheat, rye and barley. It acts as an antimicrobial, but also assists the normal sloughing and regrowth of skin cells. Apply it topically in a 20 percent cream formula (Azelex). Azelaic acid is a scavenger of free radicals and inhibits the negative effects of testosterone in the skin. It may cause irritation, redness, peeling, and depigmentation of the skin. Use it as a second line of treatment after instituting more natural, regenerating methods.

Topical antibiotics work by reducing inflammation rather than killing bacteria, since most bacteria become resistant. The antibiotics for this purpose, erythromycin and clindomycin, are available by prescription only in creams, gels, pads or lotions.

Medical care

Oriental medicine

Seek out a practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine for herbal treatments to remove Heat and Toxins and also correct the energetic imbalances associated with acne. A practitioner will determine the correct herbal formulations for each individual based on symptom expression.

Homeopathy and cystic acne
Severe acne symptoms may be helped by treatment from a homeopathic practitioner. A constitutional homeopathic prescription can raise resistance, increase immune system strength, and help resolve the tendency to develop severe acne lesions.

Antibiotics
If natural methods of treatment have not succeeded after a six-month trial, then a course of oral (systemic) antibiotics may be required. The most common antibiotic prescriptions are erythromycin, minocycline, and tetracycline. A short course of 5-7 days is safest. Be aware that antibiotics may cause unwanted side effects, especially if used over an extended period of time. It is possible that antibiotics can aggravate acne symptoms, or replace a primary infection with a secondary acne infection. Antibiotics may also cause yeast overgrowth symptoms, vaginal yeast infections, upset stomach, allergies, increased susceptibility to sun-damage, yellowing of teeth, decrease in absorption of some vitamins and minerals, and increased bacterial resistance.

Your Natural program for acne

Diet – stop bad fats, drink water, and eat fruits and vegetables

Supplements – zinc, acidophilus, flaxseed oil

Skin treatments – lemon juice wash, honey facials or tea tree oil

then glycolic acid and azelaic acid

Homemade Skin Treatments

Here are a few of my favorite homemade skin care tips.

Exfoliation Options:

* Squash a couple over-ripe strawberries until they become soft and mushy. Apply the paste over your face, working in circular motions. Let it sit for 4-5 minutes and then wash off with warm water. Strawberries have natural enzymes that help loosen, and dissolve dead skin cells.

* Once a week take a teaspoon of sugar and place it a small amount of olive or jojoba oil. Quickly, before the sugar melts, use the paste in a circular motion to manually remove dead skin cells.

* Place a little papaya in a blender and turn it into a puree. Place it in a little cup, adding a teaspoon of honey. Let is sit on the face for 10 minutes. This tropical fruit contains Vitamin C and Vitamin E, plus an enzyme that helps exfoliate and smooth the complexion.

Homemade Mask:

Pore Tightening Mask: Take the one egg white and apply to entire face. Let it dry on the skin and remove after 10 minutes. Eggs have a prote

Dry Skin: Make some chamomile tea and add oatmeal until soft. Place in the fridge until the the mixture has cooled and add a teaspoon of honey. Apply mask to face and let sit for ten minutes.

Some fun skincare sites:

www.pioneerthinking.com

http://www.yourskin101.com/

www.thriftfun.com

Herbs and Skin Care

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 283px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_7eX9bAaI2CU/S0PlhrWAISI/AAAAAAAABWY/ZgrsKm-OIkA/s320/medicinal_herbs_guide_2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5423430743017660706" />
Herbs for Hormonal Imbalances and Detoxing
Herbal remedies used for skin conditions are usually a combination of liver (hepatic) and blood (alternatives) purifying herbs, and glandular and hormone balancing herbs.

Why liver detox improves skin?
Improves digestion, balances glucose levels, good liver=good absorption of fatty acids, removes toxins (drugs such as antibiotics, changes hormone composition so the toxic aspects can be removed from the body), promotes healthy bile production (bile is reabsorbed into the body in the intestines as well, skin problems can arise when there is a long transit time in the bowel due to poor bowel functioning), stores vitamins and minerals such as vit A, D, E & K, also water-soluble B-12 and iron to be releases into the body when they are needed somewhere.

Why purifying blood improves skin?
Blood distributes oxygen and nutrients throughout the body. When there are too much toxins in the blood and body, the vital organs start to deteriorate and you may start seeing symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, allergies, breathing problems, lower immune systems and many more health related problems. Blood cleansing removes toxins from the body leading to healthier skin and all-over health.

How hormones effect the skin?
Acne: linked to androgens, which are hormones that stimulate the sebaceous glands in the skin. When the sebaceous glands are over-stimulated by androgens, acne-flare-ups can occur. Fluctuation in androgens can also cause hirsutism (excessive hair growth upper lip and chin). Acne and hirsutism could indicate a more serious medical condition related to the hormones.1 During pregnancy hormonal changes resulting from an increase in estrogen can cause melasma, also referred to as “the mask of pregnancy”. And the opposite, a decrease in estrogen, occurs during menopause which causes the skin to become dehydrated, thin and women will begin to notice the loss of elasticity. High levels of white sugar can contribute to an increase in hormones and lead to milia and acne.

Burdock Root (Arctium Lappa) Burdock is one of the most beneficial remedy for the treatment of skin conditions that can result in dry, scaly skin and acne. It is also great for skin with Rosacea. Burdock is high in a variety of minerals, particularly iron, and enriches the life-force of blood. It is specifically recommended as a tonic and a cleansing herb for the liver and lymph system. It has proven to be effective in treating skin conditions, but only if taken regularly for three to four weeks. Burdock has a bitter taste, not making it the most pleasant drink. However I have found that if I mix it with nettle and chamomile, the taste seems much milder. Burdock is completely non-toxic, is an alkaloid, diuretic and anti-microbial substance. For best benefits burdock must be made from a decoction because it is a fibrous root. Bring 1 tsp of burdock root in one cup of water to a boil and simmer for 10 minutes. Drink three times a day.

Dandelion Root (Taraxaeum Officinale) The Danelion root is considered to be one of the most supreme herbs to detox and nourish the liver. Dandelion is powerful in action, yet safe and gentle. Used for weeks Dandelion will cleanse the liver and aid in digestion, which gives it the reputation as an excellent skin purifier. It acts a tonic on the endocrine system. (Tonics are remedies that promote the health of the whole body). Like Burdock, Dandelion is bitter and can be mixed with pleasant tasting herbs such as licorice and ginger to disguise the taste. Dandelion is a diuretic, one of the best natural sources of potassium, bile producing, tonic and laxative. Bring 2-3 tsp of root in one cup on water to a boil and simmer gently for 10 minutes. * great for sallow skin

Licorice Root (Glycyrrhiza globra) Licorice is one of the primary herbs used as an endocrine gland tonic. It contains chemical substances that are similar to adrenal cortical hormones and is beneficial for adrenal deficiency and other glandular imbalances. Licorice also contains estrogenic and other steroidal properties and is used to regulate and normalize hormonal production.2 Licorice is not recommended for those suffering from hypertension or high blood pressure. Licorice is a tonic, anti-inflammatory, adrenal agent, mild laxative, and contains flavonoids. Its taste is sweet. Bring 1 tsp on licorice root to a boil and simmer gently for 10 minutes. Drink three times a day.

Nettle Leaf (Urtica urens) Nettle is a very powerful and effective herb that is safe to be used over long periods of time. Nettle is extremely high in minerals, especially iron and calcium, enriches the blood and nourished the nervous system. It also detoxifies the liver and endocrine system. It can help with bloating and mood swings related to PMS. Nettle is great in combination with burdock as a treatment of eczema and acne. Nettle is high in Vitamin C, chlorophyll, histamine, formic acid and it considered a diuretic. Pour a cup of boiling water over 1-3 tsp of dried nettle, cover the pot and infuse for 10 minutes. If you do not cover while infusing you will loose valuable oils from the herb. Drink three times a day.

Calendula (MARIGOLD) Calendula has been used for centuries to heal inflammation of the skin, whether it be due to infection or physical damage. Calendula is used for skin irritations and minor burns. It is great both internally and externally. Calendula is anti-fungal, making it great for healing acne wounds and rosacea.

Oregon Grape Root Excellent herb for liver congestion and sluggishness. Stimulates bile production. Combined with dandelion root, it is a great herb for skin disorders, such as acne. Combined with ginger and dong quai, it stimulates hormonal production and aids in regulating the menstrual cycle.3

Pau d’arco Has been long recognized as an important herb for treating cancer, autoimmune disease, glandular disorders, candida and other serious health problems. Pau d’arco aids in the health of the liver and endocrine system. This is also know to be aphrodisiac. This is the most beneficial herb to women going through menopause and those who have gone off birth control. Vitex or Chaste tree berry acts on the hypothalamus and pituitary glands by increasing luteinizing hormone (LH) production and mildly inhibiting the release of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). This results in a shift in the ratio of estrogen to progesterone, with a rise in progesterone. The ability of chaste tree berry to raise progesterone levels in the body is an indirect effect, so the herb itself is not a hormone. Best taken as a supplement - the berry is hard to find loose.

Yarrow Great for couperose skin conditions. Wash your face only once a day at night. In the morning you can rinse with luke warm water, but do not use a cleanser.

2. When taking a shower do not rinse your face with hot water. Make sure to turn the water down to a cooler temperature when you are at that point. Hot water can zap the life and hydration out of skin quickly. It can also cause capillary damage.

3. Make sure to use an appropriate cleanser that will not strip your skin. Stay away from drugstore brands such as Clean & Clear, which have ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide, artificial fragrance, and sodium laureth sulfate that are irritating and strip the skins natural hydro-lipid film. For dry skin use milky cleansers that have natural lipids that moisturize the skin, while thoroughly cleansing. For oily skin, use cleansers designed to regulate oil imbalances with natural herbs and plants. One of the biggest mistakes people make is to desire that squeaky clean feel.

Your skin is designed to protect you from foreign invaders and bacteria. A mixture of perspiration and sebum create the skin's natural protection called the hydro-lipid film. The skins natural and ideal PH is 5.6. It is slightly acidic to protect from bacteria. When we strip the skin with harsh cleansers, we can actually dry out the skin, making it more alkaline. This leaves less protection, and can cause skin disorders, acne and pre-mature aging. A bar of soap has a PH of 10 and water 7. Both are alkaline and can cause skin imbalances. It is very important to wash the skin with a cleanser that has a PH similar to 5.6. Alcohol-free toners are suggested after cleansing because they not only remove left over residue, but bring the skin back to its natural PH of 5.6. This allows moisturizers to penetrate deeper into the skin’s surface.

4. Use a gentle makeup cleanser to take eye makeup off. Do you aggressively rub the under eye are, as the skin is incredibly fragile and susceptible to damage.

5.Pat dry to with a white towel. (Colored towns can have dyes that irritate the skin)
Immediately follow with an appropriate moisturizer for best product penetration.

Nutrients for Healthy Skin: Inside and Out

This is a great article about how exactly vitamins and minerals are beneficial to a great complecion.

Nutrients for Healthy Skin: Inside and Out

Why I Love Yon-Ka

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_7eX9bAaI2CU/Sys3LW5EGEI/AAAAAAAABWA/dBNieIsJj0A/s320/yonka.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5416483645106165826" />

Products do matter. When I was first looking for an esthetician job, my top priority was finding a holistic spa that carried a product line that I could stand behind. I am a horrible liar, and have a great deal of pride in my honesty and integrity. I want my clients to see visible results with the products they take home. Personally, as a product junkie for life, I have tried everything under the sun on my skin. I have even dabbled in making my own lotions and potions. As a self-taught herbalist, I prefer to use products that offer a holistic approach. I do not want my moisturizer to just sit on top of my skin, or worse just quickly be absorbed by air. I want products that penetrate and work to change the over-all appearance of my skin by improving the activity of my skin’s natural functions. So with all this in mind, having done my research and tested the products myself, just how did Yon-Ka compare? Well, I have to admit that it is WONDERFUL!!!!!!!!! And this is exactly why........

First off, Europeans know how to do skin care right, especially the French. European nations have higher standards for skin care ingredients, and for the most part I believe they far surpass American lines. Yon-Ka is a French skin care line that started in the 1950’s and has emerged in America in the past several years as one of the leading professional holistic skincare lines. It is only found in salons and spas.

Yon-Ka was designed for the most demanding and sensitive skin types. The Yonka facial offers one of the most extensive deep-pore cleansing without the risk of irritation. In addition, Yonka uses the purest forms of essential oils, incorporating wonderful healing herbs, vitamins, humectants such as sodium PCA and rich hydrating factors such as cereal germ oil, squalane, shea butter, elastin and flower micro-peptides.

Yon-Ka uses the following five unique plant-based therapies:

1. Aroma-Therapy - Complete absorption into the lymphatic and blood system, a truly holistic approach. Essential oils are the only skin care products that can penetrate into the blood stream, chemically effecting skin. Most skin care products only reach the dermis, most only the epidermis. Essential oils heal & regenerate the skin, regulate glandular secretion, detoxify, disinfect, hydrate, reduce inflammation, and firm.

2.Phyto-Therapy (Plant Extracts)
A. Phytostimulants - wound hormones that stimulate cellular activity, in order to accelerate the healing process of a plant. When used on skin, the same function applies.

B. Phytohormones - (Ex. Sage, Licorice Root, Hops) Rich in estrogens which many experts believe improve the signs of aging in premenopausal women. As we age, our estrogen levels decrease, causing wrinkles to spread rapidly, and a loss in skin elasticity and smoothness.

C. Enzymes - Fruits, Sugars, Gums, Pectins, and Acids rich in doses of vitamins and minerals, essential for extending the life if cells, critical to a glowing complexion.
Fruit Therapy - Yonka uses fruit cides for exfoliating and skin re-texturization. Yonka combines AHA (glycolic), BHA (Salicylic), and Lactic Acid (Milk) to loosen and dissolve dead skin skins. This is return speeds up the the process of skin renewal and works on fine lines to improved the overall youthfulness of skin. Combining multiple fruit acids, instead of a mono-glycolic, allows the acid function to occur on different levels of the skin.

4.Marine-Therapy using organic sea clays, salts and algae to detoxify, remineralize and hydrate the skin.

5.Phytobio-Therapy using products rich in collagen, elastin, and amniotic liquid to increase cell metabolism, prevent dehydration and oxygenate the skin.

The formulation of each Yonka product is completely geared towards specific skin types. For example the Gel Nettoyant cleanser for normal to oily skin, conditions as it cleanses using Iris Root, which is a mild antiseptic that balances oil production and prevents sensitivity. It also contains Lavender that is an natural anti-inflammatory and red algae to hydrate and soothe.

There is so much more about this line that I love. Currently I am using Creme 28, for my dehydrated skin. It contains Sodium PCA, which ccurs naturally in human skin and is responsible for binding moisture to the cells. Highly water-absorbent, holding several times its weight in water, which makes it an excellent humectant. It also has allantion that naturally soothes skin irritation, vitamins A, E and F as well as rosemary, lavendar, thyme, geranium, and cypress to oxygenate and repair.

Yonka has a great site, where you can learn more imformation about each product.
http://www.yonkausa.com/

Come visit me a Jewell and I'll help you find the best Yon-Ka products for your skin. I have been seeing and hearing tons of complaints about itchy, dry skin and dry skin patches. The combination of freezing weather, wind and home/ car heating devices can completely dehydrate your skin. Did you know that dehydration can actually lead to skin sensitivities and even acne? Don't be afraid to moisture, even if you have a tendency to break out. Dead skin cell debris can be one of the leading causes of clogged pores and acne outbreaks in the winter months.

Is your moisturizer thick enough? Probably not! Most over-the-counter moisturizers that you buy at drugstores (ex. Oil of Olay) and even department stores are water-based. Water-based creams are easier to apply and don't leave much of a residue, but they don't have much lasting power. The dry air from the atmosphere quickly evaporates the water from your moisturizer, leaving your skin completely unprotected. An occlusive oil-based moisturizer is needed for dry skin in the winter months. Occlusive creams have high level of lipid (oil content) and less water. They are not easily absorbed by the atmosphere and leave skin protected throughout the day.

Come in to see me at Jewell and I will give you a complete winter skin makeover. We will focus on deep pore cleansing, exfoliation, while hydrating your skin with an oil infusion, moisturizing essential oils and a deep penetrating moisturizing mask customized to your exact skin care needs.

10% OFF COUPON - NEW CLIENTS

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_7eX9bAaI2CU/SyW_w4ffZnI/AAAAAAAABT4/R2E_Cuf1asc/s400/SkinFlyer.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5414944973501982322" />

Spirulina for Healthy Life, Healthy Skin

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 275px; height: 169px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_7eX9bAaI2CU/SyselVgj9bI/AAAAAAAABVY/ZIEmf0LVaPs/s400/07199g2158.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5416456603620865458" />

Why I love this amazing superfood! Lately I have been using the powdered form in my smoothies every morning, but you can also purchase it in a capsule form.

Cited from http://www.naturalways.com/spirulina-analysis.htm

Spirulina is a type of blue-green algae found in most lakes and ponds. It has been consumed for thousands of years by the Aztec and Mayans. Spirulina is considered a complete protein because well over half of it consists of amino acids. Packed with Iron, spirulina may have antiviral and anticancer effects.

These eight essential amino acids are found in Spirulina:

* ISOLEUCINE (4.130/o): Required for optimal growth, intelligence development and nitrogen equilibrium in the body Used to synthesize other non-essential amino acids.
* LEUCINE (5.8001o): Stimulator of brain function, increases muscular energy levels.
* LYSINE (4.000/o): Building block of blood antibodies, strengthens circulatory system and maintains normal growth of cells.
* METHIONINE (2.170/o): Vital lipotropic (fat and lipid metabolizing) amino acid that maintains liver health. An anti-stress factor, it calms the nerves.
* PHENYLALANINE (3.950/o): Required by the thyroid gland for production of thyroxine which stimulates metabolic rate.
* THREONINE (4.170/o): Improves intestinal competence and digestive assimilation.
* TRYPTOPHANE (1.1301o): Increases utilization of B vitamins,improves nerve health and stability of the emotions. Promotes sense of calm.
* VALINE (6.0001o): Stimulates mental capacity and muscle coordination.

These are the non-essential amino acids supplied by Spirulina:

Spirulina supplies ten of the twelve non-essential amino acids. "Non-essential" does not mean that these amino acids are not needed by the body, but merely indicates that the body can synthesize them itself if it needs to do so, provided the appropriate nutritional building blocks are available. Nevertheless, the body is better served if these excellent protein components are readily and totally available in dietary sources, since all the amino acids must be on hand as the cells manufacture enzymes, proteins, hormones, brain chemicals and the other products of metabolism. Of the thousands of biochemical substances acting and interacting in the human body, not one is derived from a vacuum; the body is ultimately dependent upon nutrient intake for all of its functions.

* ALANINE (5.820/o): Strengthens cellular walls.
* ARGININE (5.98%): Important to male sexual health as seminal fluid is 80 percent arginine. Also helps detoxify the blood.
* ASPARTIC ACID (6.340/o): Aids transformation of carbohydrates into cellular energy.
* CYSTINE (0.670/o): Aids pancreatic health, which stabilizes blood sugar and carbohydrate metabolism. Has been used to alleviate some symptoms of food allergy and intolerance. >
* GLUTAMIC ACID (8.940/o): With glucose, one of the principal fuels for the brain cells. Has been used to reduce the craving for alcohol and stabilize mental health.
* GLYCINE (3.5%): Promotes energy and oxygen use in the cells.
* HISTIDINE (1.08%): Strengthens nerve relays, especially in the auditory organs. Has been used to reverse some cases of deafness.
* PROLINE (2.970/o): A precursor of glutamic acid.
* SERINE (4.00%): Helps form the protective fatty sheaths surrounding nerve fibers.
* TYROSINE (4.60%): Slows aging of cells and suppresses hunger centers in the hypothalamus. Can be synthesized from phenylalanine. Involved in proper coloration of hair and skin, including protection from sunburn.

Minerals:

Although proteins are the building blocks of life, many trace minerals can profoundly effect health and metabolism.

The waters Spirulina favors are so saturated with minerals deposited from ancient soils and mountains that no other plants can live there. Because Spirulina thrives in such alkaline waters, it incorporates and synthesizes many minerals and derivative compounds into its cell structure.

Transformed into natural organic forms by Spirulina, minerals become chelated with amino acids and are therefore more easily assimilated by the body. Many times people have ingested large amounts of inorganic minerals without benefit to health because the body does not know what to do with these incompatible forms. In fact, evidence is accumulating that the inorganic minerals can block absorption of the organic forms, leading ultimately to mineral deficiency diseases.

Spirulina contains essential minerals and trace elements absorbed from its growth medium into chelated, easily absorbed forms:

* POTASSIUM (15,400 mg/kg): A crucial mineral that regulates body electrolyte balance. Deficiency can cause heart arrest, hypertension, adrenal exhaustion and muscular collapse.
* CALCIUM (1,315 mg/kg): The most abundant mineral in the body, it is especially important to bone and dental health, but is also involved in neural transmissions to the muscles. Spirulina supplies about as much calcium, gram for gram, as milk.
* ZINC (39 mg/kg): The pivot point of over thirty vital enzymatic reactions, with profound effects on mental health, skin tone, prostate function and healing capacity.
* MAGNESIUM (1,915 mg/kg): Deficiency can lead to spasmodic muscle disorders, including cardiac irregularities. Helps assimilation of vitamin C, B vitamins and protein.
* MANGANESE (25 mg/kg): Activates enzyme systems, along with zinc. Promotes activity of neurotransmitter acetylcholine, and helps stabilize blood sugar.
* SELENIUM (0.40 ppm): Originally believed to be a toxic heavy metal, but now known to be necessary for health. It retards aging, harmful oxidation and free radical formation, reduces the toxic effect of carcinogens, and improves cardiac efficiency.
* IRON (580 mg/kg): Promotes formation of hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying blood pigment found in healthy red blood cells. Iron deficiency is most common among women in their reproductive years.
* PHOSPHORUS (8,942 mg/kg): The second most abundant mineral in the human body, it is found in practically every cell. Functions with calcium to maintain bone density. Helps to digest carbohydrates and the B vitamins niacin and riboflavin.

Vitamins:

Spirulina supplies several of the vitamins that all living beings need to carry on metabolic processes:

* PYRIDOXINE or B6 (3 mg/kg): Involved in breakdown and assimilation of protein. Protects cardiac health, reduces edema and stabilizes female hormone levels. Dr. Carl Pfeiffer has demonstrated that B6, together with the mineral zinc, can cure some forms of schizophrenia.
* BIOTIN (0.4 mg/kg): An enzyme that carries CO, during certain biochemical reactions involved in carbohydrate metabolism. Also acts as a co-enzyme in the assimilation of other B-complex vitamins. Biotin is destroyed by eating raw egg whites and some kinds of raw fish.
* COBALAMIN or B12 (2 mg/kg): The most difficult of all vitamins to obtain from vegetable sources. A B12 deficiency results in pernicious anemia, nerve degeneration, premature senility, pronounced fatigue and mental illnesses resembling schizophrenia.
* PANTOTHENIC ACID (11 mg/kg): The "stress" vitamin, used by the adrenal glands, along with cholesterol and vitamin C, to manufacture cortisone and other steroids in response to physical and mental stress. Deficiency encourages sensitivity to allergy, infection and degenerative diseases such as arthritis and rheumatism. Ulcers and hypoglycemia have also been associated with shortage of this vitamin.
* FOLIC ACID (0.5 mg/kg): Essential to proper hemoglobin formation in red blood cells. Deficiency results in anemia, poor growth, skin pigmentation disorders and premature graying of the hair.
* INOSITOL (350 mg/kg): Vital lipotropic nutrient that sustains liver health and helps detoxify carcinogens, particularly excess female hormones. Helps normalize blood cholesterol levels. With choline, inositol is used by the liver to manufacture lecithin. Inositol is the second most abundant vitamin in the body, after niacin. Recent studies indicate that inositol, with biotin, reduces loss of scalp hair.
* NIACIN (118 mg/kg): Also known as nicotinic acid and niacinamide, which is an alternative form, niacin is essential to mental health. Dr. Abram Hoffer, a renowned pioneer in orthomolecular psychiatry, has completely relieved schizophrenic symptoms using niacin. The Physicians' Desk Reference, a pharmaceutical text used by doctors when prescribing medication, recognizes niacin as an effective cholesterol lowering agent.
* RIBOFLAVIN or B2 (40 mg/kg): The most common vitamin deficiency is that of riboflavin and results in cataracts, failing vision, watery eyes and uncontrollable eczema.
* THIAMINE or B 1 (55 mg/kg): A co-enzyme in the breakdown of dietary carbohydrate. Maintains levels of glucose in the blood. Deficiency results in weakness, cardiac damage, abdominal distention and poor oxygenation. Severe shortage results in death; critical toxemia develops from unmetabolized carbohydrate fragments.
* TOCOPHEROL or vitamin E (190 mg/kg): Spirulina contains more vitamin E per gram than pure wheat germ. This nutrient protects heart and vascular health, promotes oxygenation of cells, and retards aging.

Carotenoids:

Some substances in plant foods are not true vitamins, but provide the precursors from which the body can then synthesize the appropriate vitamins. The carotenoid compounds of Spirulina are of this nature, since they are used to produce vitamin A.

True vitamin A is found in the pre-formed state only in animal sources, such as liver. This is the form of vitamin A sometimes associated with toxicity and overdose, since it is fat-soluble and is not readily excreted from the body.

In contrast, the carotenoid complexes found in vegetable foods are converted to vitamin A only as it is needed, thus minimizing the dangers of toxicity. Spirulina and other algae are a primary source of vitamin A precursors - it is from algae carotenoids that fish livers derive and concentrate vitamin A.

Spirulina contains the yellow/orange pigments cryptoxanthine and beta-carotene from which vitamin A can be made. Two units of carotene will normally yield one unit of complete vitamin A, if required by the body. Spirulina contains 4,000 mg/kg carotenoids in these forms:

* Alpha-carotene -- traces
* Beta-carotene -- 1,700 mg/kg
* Xanthophylis -- 1,000 mg/kg
* Cryptoxanthin -- 556 mg/kg
* Echinenone -- 439 mg/kg
* Zeaxanthin -- 316 mg/kg
* Lutein -- 289 mg/kg

Enzymatic pigments:

While the protein, mineral and vitamin value of Spirulina is impressive, this minute organism is also rich in pigments that are bio-chemically important to life. Without pigments, organisms could not synthesize many of the enzymes necessary for balancing metabolism.

Chlorophyll

The most visible pigment in Spirulina is chlorophyll, a green molecule common to plants. It releases ions when struck by the energy of sunlight. These free ions proceed to stimulate the biochemical reactions that form proteins, vitamins and sugars.

Chlorophyll is sometimes called `green blood" because of its similarity to the hemoglobin molecule found in human blood cells. In fact, both are constructed of almost identical molecular structure called pyrrole rings, and both substances are chemically known as "porphyrin pigments" by scientists.

The difference is that chlorophyll contains a magnesium ion at its core, while hemoglobin contains an iron molecule. Magnesium imparts a green color to the chlorophyll molecule and is involved in synthesis of other materials, while iron gives hemoglobin a red coloration and changes the function of the porphyrin molecule to respiration and breakdown of materials.

It is believed that if chlorophyll is ingested with sufficient iron, the magnesium can be displaced to yield a hemoglobin molecule. Experiments in Japan have demonstrated that Spirulina has a marked positive effect on anemia, possibly due to the conversion of chlorophyll into hemoglobin. Of course, the high nutrient density of Spirulina, especially the blood-building vitamins B12 and folic acid and the amino acids, are also useful in treating cases of anemia.

Chlorophyll has other positive benefits to the body. It increases peristaltic action and thus relieves constipation, and also normalizes the secretion of digestive acids. It soothes the inflammation and reduces the excess pepsin secretion associated with gastric ulcers.

During World War 11, the drying action of chlorophyll and its antiseptic qualities made it a common first-aid measure to prevent festering of wounds. In addition, chlorophyll soothes swelling and promotes granulation, the process that regenerates new tissue over injuries.

Chlorophyll appears to promote regeneration of damaged liver cells, and also increases circulation to all the organs by dilating blood vessels. In the heart, chlorophyll aids in transmission of nerve impulses that control contraction. The heart rate is slowed, yet each contraction is increased in power, thus improving the overall efficiency of cardiac work.

Phycocyanin

The pigment which gives Spirulina its blue cast is phycocyanin, found in concentrations of about 7 percent, compared to the I percent chlorophyll content most commonly found. Phycocyanin is related to the human pigment bilirubin, which is important to healthy liver function and digestion of amino acids.

Porphyrin

Another important pigment is porphyrin, a red compound that forms the active nucleus of hemoglobin. Related to this structure is the polypyrrole molecule of B12, which is essential to the formation of healthy red blood cells.

These and several lesser pigments such as phycoerythrin, tetrapyrrole, phytonadione and the carotenoids are not just the "color" of living organisms, but are used to carry on metabolic processes throughout the body. Without them, enzymatic reactions would be reduced until cellular disintegration occurred.
